Block Captain / Assistant Block Captain Responsibilities
As a service to your community, we are asking that you serve as a Block Captain or Assistant Block Captain in your area. The responsibilities of this assignment are as follows:
- With the help of your Block Captain/Assistant, become acquainted with the families and individuals assigned to your block. Visit them occasionally, review the neighborhood emergency program and Family Emergency Preparedness Handbook with them, and help them to complete or update the necessary forms.
- Remain particularly aware of any special needs of family members assigned to your block. During an emergency your knowledge of their circumstances will be a valuable asset.
- Keep your Block Captain handbook up to date, with a blank First Response (Form 3) and Property Assessment (Form 4) form corresponding to each family on your block.
- When you have new move-ins, ask the family moving out to leave their handbook, or obtain a new one from the WEPC. Visit the new family within the first few weeks to give them their handbook, familiarize them with the plan, and help them complete Form 2.
- During an emergency, after making sure your own family is safe and secure, grab your Block Captain handbook and check on the status of each household assigned to your block, then report your block’s status to the Ward Command Post.
- Maintain a means of communication. We will be using two-way radios. If you don’t have one you may be asked to acquire one. ($30-50 cost)
- Participate in a monthly ward radio check as scheduled by your WEPC.
- Attend yearly meetings organized by your WEPC
