November Training – Cooking in an Emergency

Keith and Linda Hufstetler joined us for the third time this year to teach us about cooking in an emergency. After demonstrating many different methods of cooking, we sampled different recipes cooked in a Wonder Oven.

In addition to the notes attached below, here are some things Linda taught during our training:

Eco Bricks/Burning Bricks – A great source of fuel

Old Briquettes – Keep in mind that when cooking with old briquettes, they have much less heat in them.

Wonder Ovens –

  • Keep ice cream cold for 3 hours
  • Keeps casseroles hot
  • Keep hot water you cook with to do dishes. Conserve water!
  • Making bread:
    • Use pressure cooker or a pan with a locking lid (or improvise with a bungee cord) on bread because it rises
    • Mix dough, raise once.
    • Fill can 1/3 full. Top with foil when bread is 1/3 from top. Boil water and then bake in wonder oven

Miscellaneous Information:

When making muffins, use a half pint jar, narrower on the top than on the bottom.

Have two wonder ovens; sometimes you need to cook more than one  thing in the oven at the same time, or to keep things warm until the next meal.

When cooking beans: soak old beans 2 days. Add millet – makes beans a complete protein and helps with gas.
